PROFILE
Sue O'Connell FIPF, ARPS, EFIAP/d3, DPAGB, BPE 5*
I see myself as a photographer who travels rather than a "travel photographer", a term with quite a narrow definition these days. So in addition to seeking that classic Travel Photography goal "a sense of place", I also enjoy working in other genres including Portraiture, Nature, Documentary and Abstracts.
But travel is a key inspiration, and I‘m hooked on remoter destinations like Ethiopia, Oman, Mongolia, Iran. They’re not for everyone - conditions can be difficult and security can be an issue but for me the rewards outweigh any discomfort. And you never know when change will come - sadly some of the countries visited not so long ago are off the travel map now, giving images from these trips a haunting historical dimension.
International salons and competitions have been a useful touchstone for my photography and I’m lucky enough to have won many awards over the years, as well as having success in competitions such as "Travel Photographer of the Year" (five times). My work has also appeared in exhibitions including "The Year of the Print", "Masters of Print", and "The London Salon". And every successful print has been on Platinum Baryta my all-time favourite Fotospeed paper!
I am a judge at national and international level and a member of the WCPF Judge Training team. Together with my husband, fellow Fotospeed photographer Peter Brisley, I am also a regular club speaker.
